This is an entry-level classification performing professional legal work within the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. An employee in this classification represents the State of Washington as a deputy prosecuting attorney and prosecutes misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor offenses at the District Court level. A Deputy Prosecuting Attorney (DPA) 1 handles matters with lower complexity, risk and exposure and works with mentoring or oversight of more experienced attorneys. A DPA 1 may also prosecute cases or handle felony or civil commitment case matters in the Juvenile Court or Superior Court as they become more experienced and proficient.
Special Note: The Deputy Prosecuting Attorney 1 is an entry-level position with a one-year probationary period. Employees may be promoted to the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney 2 upon completion of the probationary period, based on performance and operational needs at the discretion of the Prosecuting Attorney.
